It Happen!

Ok, I've got to admit it I got a special place in my heart for these two. They have been a big part of my and my familie's life. One, Amy is our favorite singer at church (in fact she just sang on my father-in-laws funeral this past July) Oh I love that girl! and second, Josh well he is one of nicest guys I've meet and he loves just about everyone that comes in contact with him and you can't help but love him back because he makes you smile.

This day has been a day a waiting..when my daughter was in 6th grade both Josh and Amy came to her 6th grade graduation and it was there I remember telling Josh you need to marry that girl (well my daughter is in 10th grade) that's how long I've been waiting for this to happen and I was so happy to be a part of their special day and it was so fun capturing two of the most favorite people in my life.

Jason Dent another senior I did while in Dunlap, Tennessee and the only dude. Which I loved because he brought his guitar, dog, bow and cowboy hat all important things when your from the south you know. Well you got to check these pictures out from his session they are amazing!

Love this, I think every mom could cry.

It's amazing to think this is some of these kids last year playing on those fields that they dreamed of playing on there whole life.

This is great! When a guy has a little hobby and wants to bring it in to his senior pictures. That is just what Jonah wanted to do here with his senior pictures. When he's not at school or at his Grandparents place on Lake Michigan then he is off with his friends getting some dirt under the tire and that is what we tried capturing here a little bit of both, but sorry there was no major jumps in Holland that he could jump over me with..lol. Kristen's senior pictures...oh and I have a really funny story to tell you so make sure you keep reading.

Ok here it is. See this picture below, well doing burn-outs are not the best thing for your car just incase you did not know that. Well in order to get this shoot we had to do a couple practice try's and then even after we got it dad still had to have some more fun with a couple more.

Then he impressed his hottie wife so much that she could not resist to jump in the car with him.

Well it wasn't much longer, when we where finished shooting that they were still not back. So we decided to jump in the car and leave, about a 1/2 mile down the road we spot the cute couple "WALKING" sure enough the car died and was going to need major repairs. The car was about 2 mile's still down the road. So funny and this is one reason I love my job and I loved my time in Tennessee.

I first met Kate while she was in High school and she would go skiing with us at Bittersweet, it's amazing now to see her getting married but I must admit she's got herself a great guy in Michael.

What is a first reveal? It's a time just before the ceremony that the bride and groom meet for the first time in a private location. It's very sweet. We (the Photographers) shoot every moment of it and then give the bride and groom sometime alone to just talk.

Senior Rep for 2012, Nick Brown from Jenison High School | Grand Rapids Senior Photographer

I first met Nick the day of our session and was able to talk to him while my husband drove us to where we were going to shoot. I found out that he likes to have fun, especially when it comes to his family and his mom. So, we where able to stick a little fun picture in while his mom had no clue. During our session we also went to his home field Jenison High School where Nick plays football. I talk to Nick as we walked across the field and could really feel his passion for the game this helps when it came to shooting and try to capture that same passion through the camera. Well go and check them out and let me know if the last one makes you cry because it did me...lol and it even my kid! I guess it just puts your heart there.

This is the little fun one that we sneaked it while mom was not watching.

This is Landon and I could of just ate him up, their is just something about boys that I love and well maybe it's because I have two myself. I find them very interesting on how they think, feel and express their love. Just this past mother's day my own son Jesse wrote a song to me about fart's and yes that I was my mother's day present from him. Looking at Landon make's me wonder what kind of boy he will be and his mother Suzanne well I can already tell she is going to be great at raising this boy and his many adventures.

I meet Greg, Alicia and all 6 kids last night for the first time. Alicia has seen a lot of my work, with shooting her brother Mike's family pictures she knew and trusted me with it. We talked on Friday and finally settled in on a location in Byron Center called Whistle Stop park. It was such a great place to shoot, it did get a little chill out but you would never know it looking at these pictures and everyone was such a sport about getting them done, even all 6 kids ~ I loved it!. Greg and Alicia you have some amazing kids! and you to are so cute together. I can't wait for you to see the rest.

Sometime the first question when I'm out taking snow pictures, is where you freezing? I was not, I had snow pants on and every thing else in order to stay warm and still manage to move. Susan, well only when she had her coat off but you can't tell she was such a good sport and when your in the woods it blocks the wind.

Well enjoy the pictures, they are so fun and amazing. I love snow pictures!

Should you sell digital files?

More and more photographers are selling digital files, either in addition to prints, or instead of them. I’m not sure what happened first in this chicken-and-egg scenario – whether photographers began promoting digital files to gain market share; or customer demand forced photographers to begin to provide digital files. Either way, it is now a common aspect of the industry. Here is a quick survey on the MCP Actions Facebook page asking if photographers sell their files on CD or DVD. Make sure to add in your responses too.

To the emerging photographer in their portfolio-building phase, the provision of digital files to their clients seems like a necessary and sensible thing to do; and in this digital age, members of the public embrace it. From my observations, it’s apparent that many of these images are being sold too cheaply for the market to sustain. Much has already been written elsewhere about the importance of photographers placing a true value on their work (for skill, time, expenses, etc), so I won’t repeat that here.

Instead I will discuss the technical risks and strategies for selling digital images. The truth is, releasing your photos in digital form is fraught with danger.

A digital photo isn’t just a bunch of pixels. It’s your creation, your vision, your art. You plan it, you capture it, and you edit it, until it looks exactly the way you want it. You’d be reluctant to show an unfinished proof to a customer, just as a chef would be loathe to serve a half-cooked meal to a diner.

But when you release your digital files to a member of the public, you relinquish control of your work. Even if you provide a firmly-worded “Guide to usage” (and you definitely should), a whole lot of quality factors are suddenly beyond your reach:

1. Printing. Where will your client get prints made? A good lab, or a horrible cheap one? A good home printer, or an even more horrible cheap one?

2. Size. Will they choose a print size that’s appropriate to the file size and quality?

3. Cropping. If their chosen print size requires cropping (eg 8×10) will they honor your composition? Will they even bother to check the cropping before pressing “print”? Or will unexpected limb chops be the order of the day?

4. Sharpening. Will the sharpening you applied to the file be appropriate to their chosen print method and size?

5. Uncle Frank. This is the worst one. It mightn’t be Uncle Frank, of course, it might be cousin Frank, or buddy Frank, or Aunt Frances. Somebody with an uncalibrated screen, a dodgy copy of Photoshop, and an enthusiasm to “fix” your images for your customer before they print them. Be very afraid of Uncle Frank.

Any of the above factors could result in your photo hanging on your customer’s wall looking ghastly. If you believe that word of mouth is your most powerful marketing tool, consider this conversation:

“Two sugars and just a dash of milk, thanks. Oh, I see you’ve got your family photo printed! I must have a closer loo… oh dear, why do you all look yellow? And why is little Jimmy half chopped off?“

“Yes, we’re a bit disappointed about that too.”

“Who took it for you?”

“It was a photographer down the road called [insert your name here].”

“Oh my. I shan’t be calling them.”

Obviously I’m describing a worst-case scenario here. In most cases, your lovely photos will engender positive word of mouth, and expand your clientele. But the risk is ever-present. The only way to build a bulletproof reputation is to maintain 100% control of your prints; and the only way to do that is to keep the digital files to yourself.

Despite all that, I know I can’t stop the tide. Sale of digital files is an established practice now, and many photographers feel obliged to do it, even if they don’t really want to.

In part 2 tomorrow, I’ll discuss the best possible practice when preparing digital files for your customer, to minimize your risk.

Oh yes, Christmas is done and gone although I still see a lot of Christmas Trees in living rooms. I got my tree down, I think the first time in along time I had gotten it down in January. I must admit I cheated though a little. I had a friend put the tree in two parts and wired all the ornaments on soooo....it's real easy to put away..lol. Well here's a little reminder of Christmas and by the way what's up with all the Christmas Cards, I think I keep getting less every year ~ kinda makes me sad. I love Christmas Cards! I love getting Christmas Cards in the mail! I love hearing and seeing what is happening to your families. Please don't stop sending Christmas Cards!

I love street photography! It's one of my favorite things to do, although it's quite funny when people look at you like,"Did you just take a picture with me in it?" People are real funny about having their photos taken, they are worried that they'll end up all over the internet and before they know it they will see a picture of themselves plastered somewhere...lol. Well anyways I think it's beautiful when people are just being people, living their lives

I love the dice, not sure what that is all about but I see that a lot with cars like this and old people. Ok check out the ladies glasses, she is so playing her part today..I wonder if those where her moms

Looking at all the photo's get's me excited to shoot again. In the winter it can be much slower, I do have a few appointments for those of us that LOVE winter and it's beauty but other then that I work on details and designing...oh and painting my office, that will start right after I finish this post. So I guess I should end this since I don't have much time to paint before the kids come back home and it is off to games.

First post of the New Year!

Wow, I've been on vacation for 18 days. With no lap top or anything else that allows me to work, except my camera of coarse. So when I first got back to my computer I totally had to think about what I was doing again. Strange, very strange but I got the job done and here they are. Don't you just love looking at pictures, I know I am always going to other blogs and Facebook to check out pictures. I love the creativeness. Well back to finishing more work and off to the store for food, got home late last night and forgot that the frige does not have anything in it. OPPS!!!!!

Well some of you have asked me what it the "Trash the Dress". What it is, some time after the wedding the girls get back into their dresses and we go out and take some wild pictures trashing their dress as much as the want to. I also do a thing with High School girls called "Rock the Dress"

This was lots fun with these two girls, they are real close friends and got married about a month apart from each other so they wanted to do a "Trash the Dress" shoot together and as you look at the pictures they played the part well.

Welcome the Lerg Family, a few weeks ago Stephanie Lerg left a comment on a wall post I submitted to win a "Free" Christmas shoot. Well she won and here we are with their "Sneak-Peek".

It's so fun seeing new parents celebrating Christmas along with their new edition. The dresses, the pictures and most of all the presents. I so remember all the shopping I did weeks ahead of time so my dear girl had everything under the tree. Now she's 15 going on 16 and I'm surprised at myself if I even make it the week of Christmas or the day before.
